We Support Teachers

So a lot of you who follow my blog may not live around here, so you may not have heard about the Teacher's Strike going on in BC.

It began back in May (or was it April? or earlier?) with rotating strikes, until the Government locked them out in June, which caused our summer vacay for the kids to begin about a week or two early this year.

Well, school was scheduled to begin on Sept. 2nd, but there is still no agreement in place so no school for our kids.

A lot of people are frustrated with the teachers.  A lot of people are frustrated with the Government.

As a parent, I personally side with the teachers.  I want what is best for our kids.  And seriously, the teachers are not getting paid enough, the class sizes are too big, and the class composition is difficult and tricky.  I believe that.

I couldn't do what these people do everyday.  We are losing good teachers over this.  They are taking jobs elsewhere (most out of necessity for the need to work, and some by choice) and some are talking about not returning.

Earliest I can see this being resolved is not until at least mid-Oct, whether the teachers are forced back to work or the Government is forced to uphold their original agreement that they backed out on (shame on them), and I hope I am wrong on that far-away date, but I am not holding my breath.

Anyways, I could go on and on and on... BUT...

I made a card.  To honor the teachers.  Just so you know that you are appreciated.  ♥

Good for you Vicki. Teachers here in our city are working without a contract. I can't imagine what a hard job they have. Cute card as always.

Vicki, thank you so much for your post of support. Those words mean a lot during this difficult time. And what a beautiful card to top it off. Thank you, from a teacher and fellow crafter :)

I also support the Teachers.....I hope they can get back to work soon. Our children need their expertise and guidance in classes of a manageable size....among other things that need to happen.

your card is so supportive & *cute*; I think it's wonderful that you've made this, as it shows what a good parent you are, for your children & their educators; here on the west coast we do get the news, but you wonder which half is correct; the teachers all around Canada don't get enough for what they do! if the strike continues NOONE WINS!

As the daughter of two former teachers, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Teachers work long, hard hours, not only in the classroom, but long into the evening and weekends, too. I cringe every time I hear someone whining about how they get long, carefree summer vacations. My parents took required classes and held part time jobs during the summer to keep a family of 5 fed and clothed. Your card is as cute as can be and the sentiment means a great deal to all those teachers doing a hard job because they love to help children learn!

A wonderful card, and your reason for it and genuine support for CHILDREN and their education is outstanding. People need to remember that teachers want to do the right thing for children. They are not greedy or they wouldn't have chosen this career (clearly!) but they shouldn't have to starve in order to teach. Good for you!!

CUTE card and sad story!!! I have always said that the best teachers teach out of love NOT because of the salary...however, love doesn't pay the bills! I wonder if the kiddos will have to forego Holidays to make up the days...sucky for everyone involved!

Support the teachers. They are front line and deal with everything from children with no socks, no breakfast, no boots to those who have no solid family supporting them. AND then they have to teach. My daughter is a teacher because she loves it, not for the money (cause it is not fabulous). THANKS. from Ontario.
